Esher
Although Esher is a busy modern thoroughfare, echoes of the past are evident in several old remains and buildings. Esher Place Gatehouse is all that remains of Esher Place home of the Bishop of Winchester in the 15th century. A memorial to Queen Victoria sits in a small green and the unusual 16th century church of St George tucked into the side of the High Street had in its congregation Queen Victoria and Prince Albert when they stayed at nearby Claremont.

As with other towns in the vicinity it is home to many celebrities who no doubt appreciate the private roads and easy access to arterial routes providing convenient access to international airports and to London. Just one mile south-west of Esher is Claremont, house and gardens. The house designed by 'Capability' Brown is now the private Claremont Fan School but is open to the public on some weekends. The fascinating gardens - Claremont Landscape Garden are owned by the National Trust and extend to over 50 acres. It is renowned for its 3 acre turf amphitheatre rising above the lake.
