Esher

Although Esher is a busy modern thoroughfare, echoes of the past are evident in several old remains and buildings. Esher Place Gatehouse is all that remains of Esher Place home of the Bishop of Winchester in the 15th century. A memorial to Queen Victoria sits in a small green and the unusual 16th century church of St George tucked into the side of the High Street had in its congregation Queen Victoria and Prince Albert when they stayed at nearby Claremont.

Housing
Esher is a highly regarded and sought-after residential area benefiting from some of the most prestigious houses within commuting distance of London. As with other towns in the vicinity it is home to many celebrities who no doubt appreciate the private roads and easy access to arterial routes providing convenient access to international airports and to London. The average price for a detached house is in the region of £700,000 but there are a good many houses in the lower price ranges.

Schools
There are a number of excellent private and state schools in the area including Milbourne Lodge, Claremont Fan Court School and the American Community School in nearby Cobham: other private schools can be found slightly further away.

Shops and Restaurants
Esher is particularly well known for its abundance of excellent restaurants offering a wide range of International cuisine. The commercial disciplines, solicitors, dentists and other professionals favour this smart town.

Arts and entertainment
Sandown Park Race Course is popular for the horseracing fraternity and also offers a venue for exhibitions, large church gatherings and other social events. Esher has several wooded commons and open spaces around it. Of particular attraction is Weston Green Common, with the pond, old colonial church and pub creating a very picturesque setting. Nearby is Garson's farm shop which grows and sells fresh produce and the large garden centre offers products and goods from all over England. Just one mile south-west of Esher is Claremont, house and gardens. The house designed by 'Capability' Brown is now the private Claremont Fan School but is open to the public on some weekends. The fascinating gardens - Claremont Landscape Garden are owned by the National Trust and extend to over 50 acres. It is renowned for its 3 acre turf amphitheatre rising above the lake.

Commuting
Esher has a mainline train station providing fast commuter access to London - Waterloo (25 minutes). A good road network also connects to Richmond, Kew, Hampton Court and London. Towns such as Guildford and Kingston-upon-Thames are also within 15 minutes by car or train.
